You wake in the cold on the rim, often above cloud. By the time the vehicle reaches the descent road the caldera below is beginning to catch light.
Morning on the floor
The grassland holds zebra, wildebeest and gazelle in numbers, with lion prides often resting in the open. The soda lake draws flamingo, and the Lerai Forest is good for elephant bulls with heavy tusks.
Looking for rhino
Ngorongoro is one of the best places in Tanzania to search for black rhino. Sightings are usually distant, so binoculars are worth having.
Practicalities
Vehicles must leave the floor by late afternoon and crater fees are charged per 24 hours, so an early start gives you the most value from the day.
