Community visits are among the most memorable parts of a Tanzanian journey when they are set up honestly, and among the most uncomfortable when they are not.
Small groups, agreed fees paid transparently, visits at times that suit the community rather than the tour schedule, and a guide who translates in both directions.
Always ask before photographing anyone. Your guide will help, and a conversation first almost always produces a better photograph anyway.
Livestock, daily work, food, craft and conversation — not a performance. The best visits feel unhurried and slightly ordinary, which is exactly the point.
